ok so my 87e wont go into reverse, i can physicly move the shifter to the reverse spot but it stays in 1st. i thought this was due to the little c clip falling off the end of the selector shaft, but it appears to still be in place so now i have no idea what would be causeing this, all foward gears are fine and theres no grinding or anything, just when you go for reverse its still 1st. what else could cause this issue?

Worn bushings in the shifter would seem an obvious candidate.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
