    Acceleration/ idle problem

I've been having this problem for about a week now, i'll start my car and it starts fine and idles fine(sometimes a little low) and i'll drive about two miles until i hit the first stop sign on my usual route and the idle becomes very low and violent and when i give it any throttle the car wants to stall, sometimes doesn't but i will be traveling very slowly, backfiring for a while, and the rpms/speed will jump periodically even with the throttle down all the way. this happens at exactly the same spot until finally the car seems to have enough backfiring and for the remainder of the day has no problems whatsoever.
do any of you know what could be causing this and or how to fix it, ive looked for a thread on this but havent found quite what i'm looking for so if you could post the link i'd appreciate that as well.

    thanks

Back firing along with a rough idle tends to suggest a problem with fuel delivery or perhaps an interruption of spark. But since it appears to happen only during warm up of the engine the DME temp sensor could be a player.

I think what I'd do would be to start with a major tune up, including wires, distributor, and rotor if they are of appreciable age, adjust the valves, clean the ICV, and smoke test the intake. I'd also run the suite of fuel system tests in the Bentley, test the DME temp sensor, and check clean all of the primary power connections and grounds.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I had same probelm and found out its no one culprit. Assuming from your avatar pic you should have the 88-91 Motronic 1.3, if so you can start with the 5 steps to the throttle pedal to see what the fault code is. For me its several things that fixed my irratic idle. Replace all spark plugs, wire, caps, and rotor. Found out one is fowled and corrosion build up. Clean out AFM and all its connecting parts. ICV, throttle with cleaner. Lastly check for Vacuum leaks. Notorious for idle probelm. GL
