    Door Gong with Voume Control?

To electronic tech's / guru's or any one who knows their electronics:

I want to know if it is possible to fit a volume control slider to the door gong speaker in the knee bolster.

I already have it unplugged, but I had this idea to install a volume slider for it and just keep it on low. That would be pretty trick.

I just thought this would be fun to figure out, but for some reason I don't think it is possible or as easy to do as it sounds, otherwise some one would have been done by now.

I live near Signal Electronics in Torrance, and I am going to go in there and run it by one their guys and see if they have any volume control sliders that I can use for this type of application.

    Anyhoo, possible? Thanks.

The speaker in the door chime has two wires coming into it like most other speakers. Get a few different resistors, and try putting them inline with one of the wires coming into the speaker. The general guideline is that if it's an 8-ohm speaker (which it probably is) an 8-ohm resistor will halve the power output.

possibly try a rheistat? its a variable resistance source, so its adjustable..hey, works for dimming dash lights.

Thanks. I will probably try this if I can't figure a way that is adjustable.

Thanks. I will try this first. rheistat, is that spelled right?

"rheostat". A potentiometer would act as a variable resistor or rheostat if only two legs are used.

Perfect. Thats the route I am going to try. Thanks.

              You guys are seriously funny.

              Variable door chime volume? WTF!

Put a chunk if duct tape over the speaker to quiet it if that is the goal.

Meter the impedance of the speaker in the housing, then find a 5 watt "L Pad" type volume control if you want true adjustable volume...on your fucking door chime.

Thanks. I'll look into that too.

                  Really?

Do you have trouble remembering to remove the key after you shut the car off or something?

That thing is about as useless as it gets. The one thing it does that might be somewhat handy (OBC gong) it sucks at, as the gong is for whatever reason quieter than the OMGZ KEY IN IGNITION chime. And it only gongs once.

I switched the gong for the chime, and left the key part disconnected on mine. I think the OBC now chimes three times at the louder volume, and thats all that thing does.
