    Car Temp and Herater Problems

    E30 318is

My radiator has got a bit too brittle and the other day when I gave it the boot, the hose next to the expansion tank came off breaking from the neck of the radiator. Fortunately I was next to my mechanics shop so quickly popped in there.

$1900 later :( I seem to have another problem and would like an answer. From an independent source.

The mechanic replaced the radiator, radiator hoses and thermostat, he also cleaned the intake manifold and ports and the icv. Apparently the thermostat I had was the wrong one, but i am now starting to question that.

Before my repairs the engine temp would be somewhere between the first line and second line, and now it is winter and when I have the heater running on say about a 15 degree day (centigrade) and the temp sits on the first bar. Also before the repair when ever I turned the cold/heater dial to heater there would be a big clunk noise and it felt like the dial was going to brake.

Now there engine sits perfect on the second bar, which is good. But I went to go and put my heater on and the dial turned with easy and no clunk noise, and the heater dose not work now which dose not affect the engine temp, would anyone know what might not be working. Now the other problem I discovered this mourning was if I put the dial to cold and run the air conditioner (needs to be re-gassed) the engine temp gets up to the 3 bar!!!!!! Now this is in cold weather what the hell would happen in the hot weather. Could someone please advise on this as I think I may have the wrong thermostat!

Thanks a lot for any help in the problem.

Did you notice if your Aux fan turns on when you turn the AC on? Whether this affects engine temps, I don't know, but just an idea.....

That 'clunk' you are talking about is the vent opening from the blower, no? I suppose if the blower were not blowing air, the vent might not open?

metalix1021 is right about the clunk. That should be an independent issue from the temperature. I think he put in a hotter range thermostat. If I were you, I'd go back to what you had before.

If you don't have any refrigerant in the AC system, then it shouldn't negatively affect your car's temp readings. The auxilliary fan that kicks on with the AC should in effect lower the temps. If the AC worked properly, then the car should get hotter, but not the "past middle" bar hot!

Try re-bleeding the cooling system yourself.he may not have bled it completely. The M42 cooling system takes some serious voodoo to bleed properly.
