    clutch noise

i have an 87 325is and the clutch started screaming every time i step on the clutch pedal. with the clutch fully engaged no noise, with it fully disengaged no noise, doesn't matter if its in gear or not moving or stopped. it simply makes a very loud high pitch scream as if metal were scrapping metal. no slipping either.
prior to this noise the clutch was always loud but tolerable. this is worse than a loose fan belt (to me).

    anyone have any idea?

A bad throw out bearing would be possibility, or some problem with the pressure plate. In any case the transmission is going to have to come out to get to the source of the noise. So while there you might as well replace all the clutch parts, rear main seal, pilot bearing, and transmission input seal.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
