    Fan hitting coolant hose

    hi gruppe
    i have a 87is.

well last month, one of the coolant hose busted - the one that comes out of the thermostat and curve's around the cap/rotor.

turns out the fan was very slightly hitting the hose, thus a hole.
When car not running or idle, the fan doesnt hit the hose.

So i replaced the hose, trim the ends of the fan so the distance between hose and fan is further.
Well i checked today and seems the hose is wearing down again.
    Any ideas???

Car is on stock motor mounts. I ordered the IE poly motor and tranny mounts.
    Will that fix the issue?
What are my options to fix this problem?

i'm close to removing the fan/clutch completely and going with an electric fan.

    thanks

    Re: Fan hitting coolant hose

Short answer= you probably have broken motor mounts.

You can replace them with stock and it will be OK for a while, many years if you don't track/autox the car. You can use the 5/6/7 series mounts as a cheap upgrade- they are a little stronger than stock E30 mounts- I put these in my car a couple of years ago, and they are still good.

Urethane mounts will cure the problem too, but will probably transmit more vibration to other parts of the car.

Just zip-tie the hose back to the hole that you use to lift the engine. Problem solved.

Exactly how my hoses are saved from the fan.

sometimes the zip-tie method still isn't enough, but a good quick fix nonetheless.

make sure the hose is positioned correctly...since it connects at the top and the bottom, you can twist it to fit....in other words you probablly have it installed twisted. that's what had happened to me any way when it was rubbinh against the alternator.

Yes, most likely the motor mounts, happened to a friend. My hose is zip tied just like Fred said.

                thanks for all the help.

i swapped out hoses...got a spare one just in case...but not driving the car until i get the motor/tranny mounts from IE.

another question, how hard is it to swap motor mounts?
Tranny mounts shouldnt be a problem.

                thanks
