    Valvetrain clatter

There was a clatter coming from teh valvetrain of my m20b23. I adjusted the valves and I cleaned the oiler tube out and everything to make sure everything was getting oil but it still has a caltter coming form it. It only sounds liek one clatter tho not multiple valve clatter so does anyoen have any idea what it is or how to find out? I think it might be a worn rocker.

There is always some amount of valve train noise with m20 motors. Is it exceptionally noisy? My m20b25 has always ticked, if it is a clatter, as if all valves are making noise and you are sure you are getting oil to the head, I would suspect worn rockers and/or shafts.

Its an exceptional noise more then just the regular m20 valve noise. If it is a rocker though it appears it is only one because its not multiple clatters just one.

Pull the valve cover off and take a look. No use guessing.

        Keep it slideways!!

Already taken it off to adjust valves nothin looked broken and I dunno how to check for wear on the rockers right off

The only way I can think of actually testing them would be to remove them and test the bearings with a bore gauge. This would take alot of time and effort, as you have to remove the timing belt and cam pulley to push the rocker shafts, you can't just remove one rocker. Can anyone think of a way of testing them on the head using maybe a dial indicator, looking for axial play? And then there is the question of how much play is out of spec? Did you say that you are sure that you are getting oil to the head? Did any of the lobes of the cam look burnt (ie blue/black) to you? Just because you have oil pressure doesn't mean it is getting to the head.

The cam lobes didnt look burnt in fact everythign looked like it was getting oiled well and I am sure I am getting oil to the head.

In any E30 over 100K there will be a few worn eccentrics. They only cost $2.60 apiece. I replace every one that is even suspect. It is a good idea to replace the bolt and nut at the same time for an extra $1.80.------------------------- Steve
