    Car won't start!

My girlfriends car died on the way to her work this morning :(
It died while running, engine stopped, all the dash lights came on, stereo stayed on.
When I went to go pick her up we tried to start it but it just made a loud whirring sound about where the starter is located.
I don't think the motor was turning over.
She was running late so I didn't get a chance to do any troubleshooting, what do you guys think I should check first?
Any other ideas of easy stuff to check while im there?

I did a bit of searching and it seems like the main relay or the alternator might be the problem.
The starter doesn't sound like it's operating correctly but I don't imagine a fubared starter would stop the motor from running... Although the starter has gotten stuck on before due to a faulty ignition switch that doesn't always return to the correct position after starting. Maybe it got stuck? I have no idea.

The car in question is an 1989 325ic and mine is a 1987 325is, so i have some parts available for a quick swap.

I have a multimeter at work so I can do some electrical testing as well.

Thanks in advance for your help!

does the motor turn over at all? sounds like a seized motor.

    Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

      Ouch.
      That doesn't sound good.
I only had a second to try but I didn't feel the car move or anything.
I'll check when i go look at it at lunch.
Any thing I can check that would help narrow it down?

I don't know if the motor is seized, as she said it was rolling fine when the car died, ie the wheels didn't lock up when the motor stopped before it was taken out of gear.
Am I on the right track here?

Check to see if the crank pulley and cam (look in the oil filler cap) turn when cranking over the engine.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

            I will now.
I thought I could make it on my lunch break but I got swamped at work.
I'll have a helper when I go later tonight, so I will def check then.

Looks like the timing belt broke.

Took off the head, all intake side rocker arms broke off.

              Heads coming off next.

              Hopefully the pistons are ok...
