well, this idle control unit has a little wire that connected into the m20 engine harness. I haven't looked too closely yet but I don't believe my s50 harness has a provision for the connection. Should it come out?

Newer cars (m20b25?/m30b35/m50/s50 etc) have the idle contorl circuit built into the ECU. But the early 318/325 cars had an an idle control unit on it's own.
The ABS computer is much bigger in size and it's on the driver's side.

I don't, at the moment know what the box mounted to the dash above the DME on a 325i/is is, but it isn't an ICM. No M20B25 engined car ever had an ICM.
Now if you have an M20B27 engined car, it could be the ICM.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Box Directly above ecm is the cruse control, If you have a early 318 or 325e the idle control module is up there in its own recess but a bit more forward toward the firewall.
