    emergency engine swap questions

    ok here is the poop

I have an 85 318 with a 5 speed and about 300,000 miles on the engine. I recently found copper shavings in the head and after an oil change I found what looked like copper glitter in my oil filter. The problem was and still is due to water leaking in somewhere in the engine.

I have an 84 325e parts car with an auto tranny. it's all in very good shape but the chassis is trashed. its rusted out and has been wrecked. my 318 is in excellent conditon body wise.

What I need to know is will there be anything I need to pull off of the 325 thats special to the auto tranny or will everything work the way the 318 is setup? I will be using the fuse box and harness from the 325 to do this swap.

I'm too broke right now to get the stuff to set the m20 up for a 5 speed so I have no choice but to put the auto tranny in.

Any and all help will be appreciated

    Thanks,
    Steven

The only things specific to the auto would be the gear selector, and the neutral safety switch.

I suppose you are gonna swap the pedal sets as well?

THe fuse boxes are the same, but the c-101 plug my be different.

i wasn't going to change pedal boxes unless I had too because I do plan to change it over to manual some day. does the harness for the neutral safety switch run under the chassis or in the car?

i have a list together of what i'm going to get for the m20 and install before i put it in my 318.

water pump, timing belt and tensioner, drive belts, injector O rings, tranny filter and gasket, flex disc (if the one on it is bad), and intake and exhaust manifold gaskets. the engine already has new plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

is there anything else I should change before i put this engine in the 318? (besides the auto tranny with a 5 speed ) :)

I don't know if there are any differences and/or if you're going back to the 4 banger in the future but you might need the springs/struts from the 325 to handle the extra weight (if there is any) of the six.

my suspension is for a 325i. racing dynamic springs and bilstein shocks. also have done the disc brake conversion, so I'm good to go. I just ran into a problem though. I want to remove the intake manifold from the m20 before I pull it from the car and the oil return tube wont move down enough for me to remove the manifold. is there some special way of getting the tube out of the way of the manifold or is mine just sticking?

ok I may have a problem. My dad and I changed the car over to carbs and he sold all the fuel injection components including the harness. So I don't know if the c101 connector is on the car. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. I don't see any round plug on the car except for the one on the ignition module. I see a round plug on the m20 which was on the intake manifold but i though that was for a computer hookup. am I in trouble or what?

is it a rectangle plug by the fuse box on the 318?

I see a plug on the side of the fuse box in between the box and the fender. it has a rectangular cover over it. is that the C101?

kickass. i looked at it and the one on the m20. they are the same except there are some more wires on the m20. I will use the diagram that was posted in some other links. is there anything else I need to worry about on the C101 connector?

not realy, you won't have to do much rewiring just a little, most of the diagrams I've posted have been for a 325i round c101 so the 325e will be a little different.

will i need to add wires to the fuse box side from the plug? or do I just move some wires to different parts of the harness side of the plug?

should only have to maybe move some wires. the extra wires are for the check control panel that only the 6 cyl cars have.
