    What Happened?

I was driving today and all of the sudden I hear a crack and pieces fell from behind the clutch pedal....Everything was fine and working properly...at least I thought. The clutch pedal is fine though and I can drive normally. There is a tiny bit of play in the clutch pedal but it always reflexes properly....below is a picture of the pieces....

If your clutch hydraulics are bled properly that spring is not needed.
Even the return spring mounted on some pedal arms to pull it back up is not needed.

thanks thats what I wanted to hear...I was worried at first but I realised there wasn't really any noticable difference with the spring gone!

Yeah over the years I've seen several of those lower return springs fall out with no harm.
The later cars don't even have that lower spring ...just a flimsy upper spring that pulls the arm upwards.

The clutch return spring is usually only needed if you use cruise control. Without the spring the pedal may not rise enough to trip the clutch safety switch, which is necessary for cruise control to work.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
