    75+ fuel starved ?

this is a brand new symptom for the car
had to take a long freeway drive last night,( corvallis or to camas wash) filled up cheveron, premium, taffic flow was real good for the most part. after about a half hour , at speeds bove 75 the car would start stumbling, like one time in a few miles , and it progressively got worse.( evry couple of seconds)and when it would stumble the fuel meter ( mpg guge) would shootup to the top like 45 mpg. pulled into a rest stop, to check things out all looked ok ( and had a nice talk with another bmw person in route from eugen to seattle) water level, oil level, loose hoses, mouse net in air box( nope) , bad grounds, all fuses adn realys tight, all ok and then I would get back on I-5 run it up to 80. no proboems going up, run good for about 5 minutes ,, then start stumbling again same symptom, a little stumble, propgressively get worse, get on 205 traffic was slow, nevr got above 70, all was good
on the return trip, anything above 65 it would start stumbling
below 65, smooth as .....well as smooth as my car gets with billy sports and springs

Im thinking fuel filter ??? but ratrh new to bmw's was wondering if it might be something else that you guys know

    the particulars
    91 318ic
m42, no throttle body heater, 4 pintle injectors, chipped, ngk plugs. magnaflow, ( stock cat adn front resanaotr) fuel filters and air in decemeber

other mods too, but thos would not affaect the problem ( lowered etc etc etc)

I was just wondering about that, as I was looking up a fuel filtr adn saw fuel tnak breather valve listed.
unfortuantely, they are expensive, adn I wont be hitting any roads at 75 for a few days to test your throry, but I deffinetly will.

so if thta is the fix, fuel cap off, is it the breather ??? volvos are just the oppoiste, fuel cap off and they run like crap.

just did the stomp test, no codes come up

wher is the breather located ? maybe I still have one on my parts car

This doesn't sound like a fuel starvation problem. If it were you should see the econometer drive towards zero. I'd guess on it being a problem with timing reference data or a bad AFM.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

          thanks
now that i have gotten some sleep, the problem is not necceassarily speed related but RPM related
antything above 3000k and it starts cutting out

              problem solved

              take your pick

I replaced cam and crank at same time as it was easier/faster that way so it was one of them
( used off my parts car)

surprised that neither one showed in a code on a stomp test
