Bought a E30 several weeks ago with problems. First it did not want to run but now it is running well. Began to blow lots of white smelly smoke only after 10 or so minutes of running. The consensus was head gasket. I did a gasket job, had the valves ground, replaced water pump, timing belt, and the exhaust guides. Car started right up and runs well but the smoke is back and perhaps never went away. Did a compression test before the valvee job and had good compression. I need ideas.

Piston rings.
If the car blows smoke while accelerating then its piston rings if it blows smoke de-accelerating then it is valve seals and guides and it is blows smoke all the time then it is the head gasket.
If that is all good then it would have to be something in the exhorst ports or pipe. What kind of oil you using if it is like 0-10 weight or something fine like that then you should try something a bit thicker.
It could just be that the fine oil is making its way past the worn piston rings to easily.sigpic

It blows smoke, substantial amounts, after the car idles for ten minutes. I have replaced the head gasket and no improvement. I thinkIi might buy a cooling system pressure tester and use it when the car is warmed up. I think I might have a crack between the water jacket and one of the exhaust ports which might explain why I do not have any oil/coolant contamination. I assume that any pressure in the port would be directed out the tailpipe whether it be the by-products of combustion or outward pressure from the cooling system. What do you think.
