What's amazing is that one of the recommended additives, MTBE, was brewed into all of the gas they were selling here in Calif, but it got such a bad rap that its now been pulled. So now we're back to 91 octane from the pump. Its really too bad. As I understand it, the higher the octane, the cleaner the gas burns. Go figure.

Anyone had ever tried making octane boost or using toluene?

MTBE additive is better for the air, but in a few cases it's been found in the ground water. It's a trade off . . . . cleaner air = MTBE : cleaner ground water = ethanol
BTW: That MSDS (material data sheet) on Toluene is practically the same as any other organic hydrocarbon. I used to work with that stuff all of the time when I was a biochemistry major. The only compound that wasn't dangerous was water (they forgot to mention you can drown in it!)
I wouldn't worry about Toluene, as long as you don't polish off a few gallons of it ;)San Diego BMW repair -> Jake @ www.littlecarshop.com Great guy

Food for thought:
I have the MarkD chip in my e30. It pings badly on 91, and is happy with 92. It's designed for 93.Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast

Oh, and it was designed for 94 originally. Kinda got lucky in having a fairly large tolerance. ;)

#1 - As far as porsche, the owners manual for my '86 928S says 91 minimum, 93 reccomended. I run the car with 91 under 4lbs of boost and it never pings. My friend runs his under 7psi without pinging as well.
#2 - Just goto a paint store and pickup a gallon of toluene and dump it into your tank. Nothing special...
#2.5 - BE VERY CAREFUL WITH TOLUENE. The dyno shop I goto builds performance honda engines for a living... the guy had 2 of his friends die from toluene. its a very nasty substance. don't breathe it, and don't get it on you. WEAR GLOVES.
#3 - F1 racers do NOT run pure toluene. They add in a good amount of a stable non-combustable filler.. i forgot what its called.
#4 - just octane alone won't necessarilly increase your hp unless you need it (knock sensors retarding ignition because of shitty fuel). Furthermore, if your car isn't designed to use anything above X octane, then you're just eating up your cats faster with the additional octane.Michael Spiegle
