    Hard start, bogging

So I have a 1987 325e, and when I start it, i have to rev it up to about +3000rpm until it stops sputtering otherwise it will bog out. Afterwards, it reaks of gas. It drives ok, but it starts to bogs out at low rpms when shifting into a higher gear.

My guess is that its a coolant temperature sensor since on the 325e the computer reads if the engine is warm/cold from the cts. Hopefully this is my $17.50 problem! Let me know what you think though.

    Thanks,
    Nick

could be that could be the wiring for the cts or could be the cold start injector staying on, cold start injector is controlled by the coolant temp switch, and thermo time switch, the coolant temp switch is on the the thermostat housing it is the one with two spade connectors on it the ghetto looking one, i can remember if it is open or closed with the engine cold check the bently, the coolant temp switch decides if the cold start injector comes on, the thermo time switch decides how long. the cold start injector could also be leaking.

have you tried disconnecting the cts to see what happens? iirc with the connector disconnected the computer puts the mixture full rich, this is different than the later cars where you get a check engine light, you said '87 right? as in motronic 1.0 and no check engine light?

Thank you for your response. Yes it is an 87, motronic 1.0, no check engine light. Im going to try disconnecting it and starting it up.

Ok so I unplugged all the switches on the thermostat housing and nothing had any sort of affect. I pulled the dipstick and it didnt run much worse, it still ran too. Also unplugging the 02 sensor has no affect.

sounds like a bad vaccum leak

What makes you suspect a vaccum leak? Checking it out now...

EDIT- I couldnt find any. I did find that the car runs if the AFM is disconnected from the intake boot, wierd? Idk.

I fixed my stumbling problem, it was the throttle position sensor.

However, it still starts hard. Nowhere near as hard, but i gotta give it a couple revs and wait for it to warm up. Its the same hot or cold.
