It can usually be determined by when the clutch engages when releasing the pedal. If you release the pedal and the clutch starts to engage when you almost lift your foot off, I'd say it's pretty worn. I think somewhere about halfway down is a decent amount of travel.
This is all assuming that you don't have a fancy-pants clutch stop installed.

ok so when you have the clutch pressed in and gear selected, when you start to release the pedal and it engages immediately it wearing out?

if so i think mine is good for now,

      thanks for the tip

While we're on the subject, anyone know if its the same way on an E28 535i? I've heard its the opposite on my car...?

robbie, your prob sounds like you need to bleed the clutch.

dominick, i don't know what to make of your problem. sounds like it's good to me.

          hope this helps.

I have a problem, in the wet i could take off in first, change real fast to 2nd and drop the clutch a bt and it would spin the wheels into second. But not no matter how hard i drop the clutch it will just rev real high and slow down but i wont go any faster ?

Try that one again.... Rev high and slow down.. like it is slippin and wont go any faster mean the car wont accelerate when you dump the clutch back to slipin..

                  cold vs warm clutch.

Does it smell like stink inside after? If so, you have just made a clutch sandwich. My uncle's honda was doing simmilar shenanigans, turns out the flywheel side of the clutch was gone, but the pressure plate side still had some meat. Clutchspin in any gear is bad.
