    Want to turbo my 318is.

Does anyone possibly have a turbo manifold for M42 lying around that they would sell for a good price ? Looking to DIY turbo my M42 and don't want to shell out big cash to get custom manifold made. Not really worried what sort of turbo ts made for as i can customize that myself.

Also looking for forged low compression pistons for M42 and a turbo of some sort. Let me know if you can supply the goods or you know where i can get this gear at a reasonable price.

Will the stock gearbox in my 318is handle the extra power ? I am also going to do a 325i flywheel and clutch swap.

Do you think i will need forged rods, or stronger crank ? or should the standard ones suffice ? I am only looking to run upto around 15pounds thereabouts.

    Mitch

Also here is a link to a parts wanted thread.

I hope that with 15 lbs of boost a stock 325i clutch will slip and not hold the power.

If it doesn't, you need a new turbo setup :P

you dont necessarily have to spend a shitload on a custom manifold, only good ones. THere werent many aftermarket kits available (what, 2?) for the motor, so good luck finding used stuff for them. Search the bimmerforums classifieds though, there were 2 seperate guys selling turbo kits a while back

i've been hoping someone would finally turbo an m42.

if you can weld, you can make your own "log style" manifold from weld-el's from mcmaster.com or some other supplier, for about $50. Or you might be able to make an adapter from the stock m42 manifold (i'm not sure what they look like, so i couldnt say for sure).

check out www.homemadeturbo.com for ideas. it's for hondas, but it's really good grassroots info.

stock m42 manifold is basically a tubular header.

look around locally. if you know anyone in the industry, you can usually hook up some mates rates and get a mani made for reasonably cheap. if i recall, i can get one made for like $100 per cylinder. we only have four (duh) so its nt that dear. better than waiting to source one internationally, and the headfks that go with it.

IMO, i think turbs is the best option for the m42. at least the stock m42. the reason being that, running a boost controller, you would be able to run around on low boost (say 5) most of the time, and then pump it up to like 7-8 when u needs the extra oomph. the inability of a supercharger to do this is what would make me lean toward turbo.

and yes, i am looking into this myself atm.

there4 is a dude on here that goes by 'TRIKFAB'. he is in melbs and runs a boosted m10. he makes manis and stuff, so he might be a good one to contact. Bavaria Cars in sydney have done a few turbo m42s, so they might be good to talk to.

Also AVO in melbs did a turbo e30 318iS.

Thanks for the contacts man, i will most likely lower the compression ratio by getting some new pistons so i can run high boost

Wouldn't a blower work better on the M42 for city driving?

                    explain your comment?

its not like your hauling ass through town so you dont need the "instant boost" which i think you referring to. turbo'ing would be a better option because around town you can stay out of boost if you want too and retain some gas mileage.

Correct, and i don't neccessarily live in a city unless you call a population of 40,000 a city ? more of a town. I like the idea of turbo because yes you can drive around without hitting boost.

I think from a drivability point of view, having instant power down low would be an advantage to the usual lag associated with turbos for street driving. I guess running no boost is a bonus.
