Brake Master Cylinder Lid - Turkey Baster Thing Popped

Okay, so I bought this '87 325e a couple weeks ago and noticed the lid for the brake master cylinder reservoir looked a bit weird. I have seen some pics of other engine bays and have seen other lids like this but some have a little black cap on top. I'm guessing it's some type of brake fluid level sensor type thing but don't know for sure.

My questions are:

What exactly is this and what does it do?

Can I fix it easily or replace it with solid cap?

That is the correct cap. It has a fluid level sensor.

yup, you can get em from any dealer for reasonably cheap.. that one looks shot..

so that little plunger is supposed to be moving freely with the fluid level? I mean is it normal to be sticking out of the cap like that?

There are two different kinds available. One is for ate systems, the other is for girling. I'm not sure if they are interchangeable so check with your build date and find out which one you need.
