    Air Conditioning/Fan Is Being Weird

    Hey guys,

    Well heres the symptoms:

    1. Fan will not work on levels 1, 2 or 3
    2. On level 4, it does work.

Also, does the heater need the fan to be working for you to feel the effects of the heat? If not, somethings wrong with my heater system as well, but if they are connected, then it's not a seperate problem.

    Thanks for any comments.

Resistor pack on the blower motor. Go in through the engine bay... the black rubber-ish piece on the firewall, take that off. There are some 9mm (i think) plastic hex head type things. 2 on right and 2 on left I believe. Take that off and the blower motor will be in the middle. There will be 2 white plastic tab jobbies that hold the plastic cover over the blower motor. The resistor pack is 3 springs on a metal plate at the bottom middle of the blower motor. :)

Thanks a lot, now that I know it's the blower motor, I did a search and found everything I needed.

Well, its not the blower motor itself. :) Its the $5 resistor pack. Its a very simple fix :)

Heh yeah, understood :) Thanks. I guess it's just something that comes about with age of the resistor?

Yea, its a common problem. They just wear out I guess.

The resistors consist of coils of nichrome wire. They get hot when current flows through them...that is why they are located where the fan can blow air across them. To prevent overheating of the resistors, there is a bimetal safety switch to cut off the current if the fan motor stops.
The resistors rarely wear out. It's the contacts on the safety switch that get dirty or burned. Pull the resistor pack and look for the contacts (set of points, spring loaded) on the base plate, under the resistor coils. Clean the points with a strip of 600 sandpaper and electrical contact cleaner.
The chance that all three resistors would fail at the same time is very small. Only the smallest resistor and the safety switch are in the circuit for all three lower speeds of the fan. You can check the smallest resistor (the shortest wire coil) for continuity...it should be 0.35 ohms. But in 99% of the cases, it's the safety switch that is causing the problem.

Pull resistor pack. Rub with alcohol swab. Let dry (what, 40 seconds?). Install. Enjoy functioning fan speeds.

Wow. Um. Didn't you guys notice that he said he was done fixing the problem?

                      Yeesh..

Anyway, the heater thing--yes, your vents will always blow air in unless you manually close the vents (all three sliders to the left) so if your vents are open, and the thermostat is set to hot, then hot air will flow in definetely.

Heh, actually I haven't done it yet... Final exams are taking up too much of my time.

I took a quick look at the area, and that cover that covers all of the wires, are there any bolts holding that on or is that the thing with the "4 screws and 2 bolts"? Because I couldn't find any of them, only 2 bolts on them. It looks like the wiring harness to me.

And then I guess behind that is where theres the 4 screws? And then the cover to the blower motor and then below is the resistor pack?
