Tachometer not accurate in 1986 325es

Problem: My tach reads high, about 1000 rpm.

The car is a 1986 325es but I installed a 1987 engine with all wiring and computer. I changed the speedo to the 87 unit.

It seemed to read real high so I took it to a shop who used a timing light with a tach and confirmed the error.

    I am lost, please help.

    Thanks, Chuck

Check to see if the cluster has a four cylinder coding plug. If it has the wrong coding plug the tack will read high.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
