    Droning sound in 5th

My girl friend's 92 325ic just rolled over 150k and as of late when going into cruising gear (5th) there is a loud as drone like sound. It really is unbearable. shift down to 4th and hold the speed and the noise settles. You guys think the tranny is going? What's up?

Sounds more like an exhaust leak, but I would think the droning would happen in all gears. Do you feel any vibrations? 150k! Where does she drive that thing? My 92 325ic just hit 56k

The same thing happens in my eta, except I have an automatic. In drive at around 65mph theres a loud droning noise, but when you downshift to 3rd the noise goes away. I am also wondering if this is the transmission, or what. I don't know how long it's been doing it though, since I just got my car in August.

Anyone think it could be the differential? (good excuse to swap to a 3.25 diff)

Bmwguru that is one of the possibilities I came up with she has what I call a fart pipe on there...Maybe that thing is fucked up, who knows. Anyone else got anything? She got it when she was 16 (4 years ago) with 95,000 miles. We take it to the Outer Banks quite a bit in the summer b/c it is a cabrio and my 3.0 gets shitty gas mileage.

I don't think it could be the differential if it goes away when you shift. The differential will always rotate at the same speed at a given road speed. Noise at a speed or speed range, regardless of gear selection would be an indication of a differential problem. I would look at the exhaust system first if I were you. If it isn't exhaust related, I can't think of anything else it might be right now. Maybe someone else will have some ideas.

My hangup with an exhaust leak is why is the sound predominant in 5th and not any other gears? Not ruling out the possibility though.
