I've got an '84 325E that rattles around 1500rpm. It sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine, but I can't tell where it's coming from specifically. The engine was rebuilt 5 years ago so I don't think it's anything internal. Any ideas?

A rattle that seems to come from the front of the engine could be associated with any of the rotating parts located there (alternator, PS pump, A/C compressor, water pump, fan clutch, or timing belt tensioner). With the belts off you can check all of those for worn bearings or slop. If you pull the timing belt to check the tensioner, replace the belt. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
