Hey all,
Since i cant work on the car now i figured id just get a checklist.
I got a 1985 323i manual 4door for $500 aud. Car has new fuelpump clutch and front discs in last year (reciepts to prove). steering column and suspension is also good. Interior is shocking but all controlls seemed to work (except for some dead bulbs) and the headliner was in perfect condition and sunroof works. Was left unregistered for 6 months
Advertised with electrical issues so we had to push start it. he told us that every now and then you could start it with the key. push starting it worked till it ran out of fuel and since then shit has been clogged.
Anyway my main mission is to get the starter motor going so we (mostly my mate lol) clean the shit out and get it running.
First trying it with a crappy battery i just started it with the key and it turned over a few times and resisted cranking but after that was running very happy, revved it a little bit and didnt stall and sounded ok.
stopped it and tried to do it again with no luck. With the headlights on they would dim severely.
When i put the key in and tried to start it i would hear a small air noise for a short amount of time come from some disc like thing above the motor.
The OCM alarm was pissing me off as it went off a few times and the extra door lock with the magnetic key didnt work, i read online that unplugging the unit would still allow the car to run. I couldnt verify this as the car wasnt working in the first place anyway.
Tried again without ocm some few hours later with the shit battery and it tried to start but stalled. Again but was much less happy to start.
Then got a good battery and wouldnt go. Headlights would not dim when trying to start it
Also fuse #10 would blow constantly for previous owner and i found either 21 or 22 to have been blown. im going to replace them with correct values and have a look to see what happens. Odometer never worked for him either. He put in a 30A fuse for #10 (that ive since removed). He said that his son tried to intstall a stereo, that has since been removed and i pulled out the stereo harness to see if it had rubbed any wires and created a short (couldnt find anything).
Car has about 220-250 km's on it (change of instrument cluster, owner said it was 220-250).
Things i will try tomorrow:
clean up the terminals and connection to ground from the battery to chassis (maybe replace cable?)
Jumper cable from ground of battery to somewhere on the motor
giving the solenoid a tap while trying to start it.
Also with the OBC+Alarm. With the harness removed will the car start and be driveable? And is there a way to disable the alarm part of that circuit? I dont really want any extra immobilisers or anything intefering atm (thats why i have it unplugged). Someone said on the internet these things were plug and play in that you could just remove the relay box and it would be disabled.
Also with the starter, does the E30 have a neutural position switch or a clutch position switch?
As i have not owned a E30 before could you also give me a list of other things i might need to replace? we are allready going to do all of the oils and coolants just need to get the electrical side working before we waste time on that haha. Only really need to get the car running so i can register it and drive it for a month, then the car is going to have an allready built 325e+323i put in
If ive done any really dumb mistakes please let me know, i havent been that cautious with this as its a very cheap car and im not too worried about the current motor.
thanks in advance
