Your reply got me thinking though.. What other transmissions will bolt up to an M20?

I'm trying to think about the PO's situation trying to find adequate parts. Now, finding a Getrag 260 isn't too hard for me, but I don't know about the other dude.

Can you mount a transmission from a 318i? What about an E28/34? What about the ZF off an E36 with an M50? I'm having trouble visualizing it properly. What really affects here?
The getrag or ZF from the m50-powered e36's should bolt up to the m20, but I think it would require a modified driveshaft. If my logic is correct, it would tilt to the left about 10 degrees.

Yeah I was trying to picture the amount of tilt. My tilt is way more than that. I mean, when I've got fifth in, the stick is just off dead center.

hmm. My driveshaft looks pretty much normal, but then again I have not taken a very good look. What are the distinguishing features of the 260 so i can take a look this week since my car is in the shop anyways? Anyone got a part number?

I think i am just going to stick with the e36 transmission. I have quite a bit of work ahead of me, this car i picked up needs some help.

Something that breaks everything down into categories and covers the stuff that they missed. I have a quite a bit of information on my computer right now. If anyone else wants to summarize their experiences, take pictures or anything else, I'd be more than happy to put it in the program. I'm also open to ideas as far as to what the best GUI layout for the program would be.
That would rock, any extra info would be great. Would help alot of people planning it in the future, including me.

Haven't gotten to go to the shop. I may do so in a bit if I can bounce from work soon. At any rate, i just remembered that the car generates a lot of heat from the transmission area... like, if i had my hand on the center console i feel a LOT of heat. There also seems to be cloth stuffing around there. Should I yank all that crap out? It ain't factory, I know that.

If you still have the cat, then that is what is probably causing the heat. cat's get very hot, after removing mine the heat went away.
