I remedied this on my '89 325i by using a cable luber from my dad's toolbox out at the airport.

It's a little device that clamps over the end of the cable housing and seals against the cable with a rubber block, but allows lube to be forced into the cable housing using a small hole on the side. You use one of those extension tubes to spray it in there.

After a few applications of silicone spray the pedal moved effortlessly.

And for the '01 Jetta comment, aren't all the new VWs throttle-by-wire anyway?

I thought only the brand new VW's were throttle by wire? Isnt that the computer that senses where the pedal is, then applies that to the engine instead of a pedal actually moving a cable?

if your throttle body sticks a little when you first push on it, then something is out of adjustment or dirty or both. clean the spring up top and the butterfly valve on the inside with some carb cleaner or something, then lube the top with a something other that WD-40.... that stuff should never be used as a permanent-like lube. a light oil (few drops) on the spring is nice. You can also take your throttle cable and pull it of the little metal body it is attached to and drop a lil oil in there... that combo, having the moving mechanicals cleand and lubed, always turns out nice for me.

Well the TB doesnt stick at all when it first opens. Although... the other day I had the hood open to look at it. And when I would blip the throttle REALLLY quick (moving the throttle with my hand on the engine) it made a short swoosh noise. I listened a lot and determined it was coming from the airbox. That's normal right? Just a valve or something in the AFM opening in the airbox?

yes all the new vw's are drive by wire, from 2000 and up, that is what makes the 1.8t swap a pain in the ass. although if you get a AEB code engine from the earlier A4s and passats those have a throttle cable, and the engine of choise to swap.

Our Pissat was an '01 with TBW, and the response was so shitty... ugh.

Matter of fact, now that I think about it, EVERYTHING was shitty about that car.

Today I'm getting snow tires put on my 325 so dad let me drive his car back to school from lunch. While I was driving I tried to see the difference in the "throttle by wire" thing and the normal throttle cable in the bmw. Not only does the car have turbo lag... its like the throttle lags. You push the pedal down and it takes it a sec for the computer to say, "hey engine...rev". Its kind of annoying now that I realize it. :( Thanks for making my driving experience in the Jetta more annoying. :)

back in the day, my girlfriend's mechanic replaced the throttle cable in her 87 325 b/c it was really heavy, and it made a huge difference. i think he said something about the old one stretching.

sounds like bullshit since u can adjust the tension if it stretched.

bullshit or not, the new cable made a big difference. not feather light or anything (thankfully), but a lot lighter.
