I could do it if I were an octopus! There are 3 bolts holding on the pump, and a shaft that drives the pump has to be properly positioned, all while holding up the pan and working through a mail slot! :x

So....the infamous "assembly is the reverse of removal" is grossly misleading in this case.
Though this is really not of much help, it is how I installed my oil pan.

IIRC, I left the oil pump in the pan and slid the pan in to place. Then I struggled to get the oil pump back up and bolted down. The only thing I really have to remove was the rack (and I just unbolted it and pushed it aside). I do remember having some difficulties getting the oil pump drive to stay located, a good dab of oil to create some suction seemed to work well so it would stay in the engine.

The engine, transmission, and subframe all stayed in their normal locations. Definitely a PITA but with some patience it can be done. It took me many a trys and much vulgarity.

Throwing a few wrenches during the vulgarity often helps.

I have done this multiple times.. I always got away with jacking the tranny as high as it would go. I think my engine had about a fingers with between it and the firewall near the heater blower. after it was jacked up I had to unbolt the rack in order get to some of the oil pan bolts. I was able to remove the pan with the pump in place.
maybe I got lucky.. I got the task of taken this thing off down. did it 4 times in a month. :D

It would appear that you need to start paying attention when you're driving.

I cracked it the first time in boston because I was forced around a pedestrian into a man hole cover. replaced it then. I started the turbo project later that month and had to take it out to make the oil return. it came off a few times after that because of a piece of metal that we thought may have fallen down thorugh the oil journals(didn't actually happen) can't remember what the other time was for. something stupid..
anyway, I learned never to hit anything with thte oil pan after hearing that horrific noise when I did it the first time!
