I was driving last night and noticed that the inspection light on my car turned on. It is near the oil service light. Why did this turn on and if it is no big deal how do I turn it off? I also need to reset my oil service light, but I know that has been covered multiple times, so I can just search for that.

It just reminds you to take the car to BMW and spend a lot of money to get the inspections done.
Of course, that was in the late 80's-early 90's. Now it's just a little pain in the ass light that, if you change your oil every 3000 miles, you shouldn't even pay attention to.
To reset it, jumper pins 7 and 19 (I think) in the diagnostic socket located on the firewall if you have a 318 or near the head on a 325, and turn the key to the "on" position until the lights disappear. Voila.
"See, we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."
