No Heat or A/C

I have no experience with the Heating/ Air Conditioning system of E30's, but I have no heat in winter now and my a/c was barely functioning in fall. The fan is blowing strong, but no regulation of the air temperature. Is there something that I can check or do I have to just start replacing parts?

For the heat, check the temperature of the heater hoses going into the core. IF one is hot, and one is not, change the heater control valve under the dash.
