    New locks = dealer.

The door/trunk locks can be rebuild/re-keyed by your local locksmith. From what the locksmith told me, the ignition one can't be re-keyed. I bought a new ignition lock with factory key from the dealer, and brought spare locks to a local locksmith to rebuild/re-key.

You can buy them online as well, but they won't match your current key etc... so you'll end up with different keys. Call your local locksmiths.

hey, my drivers lock is toast too. you can buy this rebuild kit for the doors 51-21-9-061-343. I have a set from Tischer coming to me, it was $25+shipping. i don't know about the trunk though...but at least this way if you use the rebuild kit you can use your existing key.

FIRST thing to do is go to your local dealer and get a fresh key cut from your VIN.

I bet this cures 70% of your shitty lock issues.

I tried that, and it did help on most of my locks, but I think the cylinder is worn out in the drivers door. local lockthief wants 65 an hour to "rebuild" said ti would take him at least a half hour ( prob 10 minutes)
so a $25 kit sounds good to me, plus another skilll I can learn

I have another cylinder, from antoehr car, but want all keys the same

duboy- when you get it, mind taking some pics and showing what it comes with? I'm curious, and I'm sure more people are as well...

Luke- I had no clue how to get a new key, thanks for that nugget...need to get a couple of spares before my sh!tty locks break the only one I have...

You take your SPARE lock cylinder to the locksmith with the key. That way you don't have to pay him for removing the lock from your car and re-installing. It cost me only $35 per lock cylinder for a locksmith to rebuild it and re-key to the key I provided (from the dealer).

Otherwise of course it will cost more, since he'll have to do more work.

i have a fresh cut key and it still dosesnt work. all the locks are pretty much just seised up. the passanger door i can lock and unlock from the inside but with the key from the outside i cant even turn the lock. same with the trunk accept since it wont budge i cant lock the trunk at all. and the driver door is actually really weird... i can turn the key all the way from the left all the way to the right back into a flat position and nothing happens when i try to lock or unlock that door.

you'll have to search for it on tischers parts site as i can't seem to direct link to it. http://www.getbmwparts.com, search parts and just copy/paste the part number in there (don't have to enter your car year/model), its a really vague description something like "8-Lock Cyl" but i verified with them that it is in fact the rebuild kit after paying 2.5 times as much and getting a new lock cylinder with 2 coded keys from them. I will be returning that :-)

Will do, yeah there's a lot of pics out there about the process, but not what comes with the kit itself.

Kit came in today, comes with pretty much everything, minus keys of course. This kit is part number 51-21-9-061-343

oh and i gave out slightly wrong info before. there are two rebuild part numbers:
                          51-21-9-061-343 (Central locking, left side)
                          51-21-9-556-313 (all other door locks)

the top bag full of tumblers i believe is for the lock portion, the bottom bag of tumblers is for the deadlock portion.

oh and it came with a very shitty resolution printout of how it all goes together...it is all in german. If anyone really wants to see it i can scan it in, but i'm pretty sure it won't help much :-)

I will be doing the rebuild in the coming week or two.

I have installed this kit before (from Pelicanparts) and it worked great. I will be redoing all my locks at some stage.

The amount of deterioration on the old cylinder was crazy, so much so that I had to guess what inserts to use and set it to my key by trial & error.
