    Central lock control unit

    Questions

I've read in two different manuals that state to disconnect the battery before disconnecting the central lock control unit. Does anyone know if doing so will actually damage the control unit? Is there a way to test if it's working properly. I'm trying to find out if I need to be in the market for one.

After many years of being inoperative, I'm trying to get my power locks to work again.

There is a whole section devoted to central lock troubleshooting, The control unit is basically a bunch of relays I don't think there is much sophisticated circuitry there that could be damaged.

I am with you on that I need to get around to fixing mine... one of these days...

The reason you want to cut power is because it has a tilt sensor in it that is designed to unlock all the doors after a rollover accident. That is a "one use" feature and the unit needs to be replaced afterwards.

Do you know if there is a way to test if I have used my "one use" feature?

I don't really. Just follow the procedure for testing everything from the link Adrian provided. For my 88 it is page 47 - 51. I am planning on doing this myself.

            NEW question:

I've got it all working again....almost. All of my power locks now work except when I try to lock/unlock from the passenger door. It acts lock a non-power system when I use the passenger side knob or key slot. However, if I lock/unlock from the driver side or truck, the passenger side actuator will "actuate." I looked at the electrical diagram extensively but can't figure this one out.

            Any ideas?

That suggests that the microswitch on that lock isn't working or there's a problem with the wiring to the microswitch.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
