Can I ask a small favor

    Hello all,

Happy new year. I am trying to solve my fuel injection problem. The o2 sensor code comes on and I am going to get an oem one next week. I had spliced a universal one a couple of months ago so I am going to try the non splice method next. Any how I did adjust my throttle position sensor as it was not closing at idle. ever since then things are different. I read a procedure for adjustment to move the throttle set screw to bring the idle down (off of another forum they had an article on the subject)

Here is my favor can someone please when they are playing with your cars remove the electrical connector to the throttle position sensor when the car is running and let me know what rpm the car sits at ... Before I adjusted mine it was at 3000 rpm. now it is about 1200

I could not adjust it down to the recommended 800

i am trying to determine if my throtttle body needs to be adjusted or does my brain need to be adjusted for screwing around with fuel injection.

    thanks

I will let everyone know what I figure out

It would help if you would list your specific year and model.

I know someone else will chime in if I'm incorrect but you should be unplugging the Idle Control Valve and adjusting it to set your idle. Other than making sure the throttle body switches are being made at idle and WOT you shouldn't be adjusting anything there. At idle your TB is supposed to be completely closed so that your ICV can properly meter the air getting into the engine. Lastly, check for any vacuum leaks.

      It is a 87 325i

I have a three wire ICV and I do not see where to adjust it.

I already adusted the throttle stop. (For better or for worse)

It runs alot better but I get a o2 code on the dash

      thanks for all the help

You should never need to adjust the throttle stop. On your car the ICV is not adjustable, the computer has enough range to take care of things unlike the older ones. Put the stop back where it was, readjust the swtich, and check for vacuum leaks tripping your O2 code.

exactly what he said^^^^ things dont just come out of adjustment one day. you should never really have to adjust any of those adjustments. Look for a component that is bad or a vacuum leak or something of that sort.

            That sound like good advice.

I wish that it was not snowing so that I could get to the junk yard and yank some stuff off 325i.

Now how can I check for vacuum leaks safely. Is it dangerous to spray starting fluid all over the place looking for racing.

I changed out the boot, and vent hose, oil filler cap.

            Thanks for all your help.

I use throttle body cleaner to check for vacuum leaks. Also, another trick that I use is to cover the intake into the filter with my hand, which amplifies any vacuum leaks you may have. You will be able to hear were the leak is if it's bad enough.

                thanks again

Does anyone know if the 87 325i has a idle control box under the dash somewhere or is it controled by the computer.

                Thanks for all the help

I will keep everyone posted and if by luck I figure something good out I will surely share it

                    So now what to do.

Do I change out the afm and idle control box and o2 sensor (again) I had spliced one in there only months ago.

It is running better but I get a check engine light every time it warms up (o2 code)

I am still at a loss over the abs issue.. The light comes on and or the brakes pulsate when they dont need to. Just before I stop from a controled speed.

the car has 187K on it. It was never abused How long does a afm usually last as well as the idle control module?

I do like the car and hopefully can put alot more miles on it.

                    thanks

Since your car is 325i it does not have a seperate idle control computer, its handled by the Motronic. Only 325e or 325 have seperate boxes.

                        Thanks for the info

I did not yet get under the dash to look. You may have saved me a trip.

                        thanks again

                            Thanks again for your help

I changed out the o2 sensor and I am still getting a o2 check engine code.

The old sensor had some black sute on it if that means anything . I can post a pic tomorrow and show everyone if that would help.

I am going to get a slightly used afm off of ebay to see if that helps.

then I may readjust the tps and the throttle stop adjustment (which I regret touching but that is what I am good at)

                            thanks

                              hey guys,

I know I should have left it alone. Any advice on how to set the throttle stop screw. I dont have a good idea on where it should be.

                              Ithanks again
