    Strange interior 'dinging'

So, I am pretty new to BMW's, I bought my first 1990 325i about 6 months ago. I love it, and have done many improvements since the purchase. One thing that is really starting to annoy me is a strange dinging coming from what seems to be under the dash. It has happened quite a few times at what seems to be random times.

I did notice on my 6 button OBC the temp 'F' starts blinking when the dinging occurs (its like a beep but sounds more like a ding). It has been fairly cold but what is the purpose for the dinging? Is it to tell me its cold outside, because I know that! Its really starting to bug me as to why it does this and was wondering if one of you could tell me why it does it.

It's a warning that the roads could be iced over.
