HELP! shifter won't engage. feels like it lost the tranny

I was taking some advantage of the low traction in the rain, and i shift into 1st , do a little doughnut in a culdesac, then go to neutral, and when i try to put it back into 1st, it won't engage. the same with every gear. it seems as if my shifter has lost all connection to the tranny. fuck fuck fuck shit.
since i was on a hill, i rolled down to my friends house and parked. but wtf? has anyone ever heard of this?

I thought there was a transmission thread. but i couldn't find it. sorry if this is misplaced

i broke my selector rod not too long ago. get under the car and see if it's dangling. does the shifter spin in place?

get under the car, find the shift linkage and fiddle with it.
Something loose=something wrong.

also, from the top you can pull that rubber sound boot and have a little look around.
