    noise from rear

Got in my car one morning and drove up the street and noticed a thumping hollowish noise, kinda sounded like the muffler was hitting up against the spare tire well. So i made sure it wasnt and that the exhaust wasnt hitting anything.

Still makes the noise, is speed related, however its not always constant, if i put the car out of gear and roll the noise is greatly diminished, and sometimes even under load it makes no noise.

    wheel bearing?

ps. i took the wheel off on the side i think it is and made sure everythign looked good, and also removed the parking brake assembly to make sure that wasnt the problem.

    any help would be great.

edit: was thinking maybe the CSB? if that is shot would I have to replace the whole shaft or just the bearing?

edit II: i have a buddy with a 325i that is parting his car out, are the driveshafts interchangeable? i have a 318i, and was wondering as that would help my search greatly.
