is there anyway to tell when the halfshafts are shot, other than taking the boot off and looking at it.

With the transmission in gear and e-brake set, grab the half shaft and try to twist & otherwise move it around. It shouldn't have any motion except a bit along the axis of the shaft.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
