my guess, adhesion.

i would hope that the expensive tape adheres better than dollar store. also i have noticed in some cheaper (non cloth) electrical tapes that they dont stretch well. when i apply e tape i try to give it a bit of a stretch, this wraps it tighter and helps it stay in place.

it is easy for people to get jealous around here, especially when their e30 is very similar in appearance to yours, if you know what i mean.
