    m42 valvetrain noise

well i have this high pitched noise that will happen every a couple times a second when i rev it at like 2000rpm. This isnt the timing chain is it? can someone better describe the timming chain in need of replacment sound?

timing chain tensioner most likely. with 20w50 there shouldnt be too much valve/lifter/whatever noise unless something is wrong.

yep i replaced the tensioner and the noise is gone. But i think im using 5w40 oil, is that bad?

depends on the temperature, so the noise is the tensioner? thats just the screw thing with the cylinder that screws in just below the head? i didn't know that could go bad, looked like a part that wouldn't wear... maybe i should replace it, iv got 240,000 km or like 149,000 Miles. im guessing i should do the tensioner?

5w40 isn't horrible, depending on temperature, but I would switch to at least 15W50 in most areas as soon as financially reasonable, but no reason to waste good oil.

20w50 seems real damn thick to me. I don't remember what I use (so sue me) but I know it's thinner than that.

what are the advantages or disadvantages of thinner oil?

Advantages are that the oil flows easier threw the passages and pump hence making it lubricate easier and helps out the oil pump.

Some disadvantages would be if you have leaking seals the oil can escape and dip out or burn off easier.

cool, is that the only disadvantage? i may switch to 10w next time, although i already have another set of 5w and i also have some bmw 5w synthetic i might try

Choosing oil weight also has to do with the internal tolerances the motor is built to. Too thin of an oil in a loose engine is a bad thing. On M42 you can get away with 10-40, but 20-50 woudnt hurt as long as you're not it a really cold climate.

is it only bad because it would leak or is there another reason?
