just dont go OEM. as for better batteries, they all suck, these days. it's really the luck of the draw. one battery will never last the same as the same battery next to it, even in the same car.
only thing i can say is i, by far, replace the fewest interstate batteries. dont know if that's a matter of people replace them, themselves or they just last longer. i just dont replace them as much.

Advance Auto Autocraft, Autozone Duralast, and most OReillys/CSK SuperStarts are made by Johnson Controls (the other OReillys and most Napa's are East Penn). Most others are Exide (<crap batteries)1989 cirrisblau-metallic 325i

Optima red top, hands down. 3 year replacement, 3 year pro-rated warranty. They don't ask questions.
They hold charge better, don't leak, don't off gas, therefore the terminals never corrode, nor does the body of the car next to it.
We use them to replace our batteries when they die. We had a red top that we left in a jag (lucas electrical :( ) which killed it, it sat dead all winter, didn't break, and worked perfectly after recharging it in the spring. Try that with a flooded cell battery.
I've also replaced 6 trojan deep cycle batteries in a GEM car with optima D31Ts. It's abused like you wouldn't believe (4 years now?), and it still has enough torque to spin the tires. They're the best lead acid batteries I've ever used.
That said, you don't have to buy an optima brand battery, IMNSO any AGM battery will do.Last edited by u3b3rg33k; 03-02-2010, 06:18 PM.

Another brand i'd recommend is Odyssey. If you don't like Optima, buy from them.
Same benefits over flooded cell batteries, no terminal corrosion, no body corrosion, better CCA, and so on.

Seems like I've seen a lot of very old OEM batteries from about 6 to 8 years ago that are still good. My understanding is those OEM BMW batteries were sourced from Douglas batteries. I think they're exide now. Otherwise I'd agree that Interstate batteries seem pretty good.'88 325ic - Vert in winter baby!
