Crazy Story - Engine issues - And serious questions. HELP

So heres the scoop: Starting with my story and ending with my questions.

And buddy and I (both bimmer lovers) decided to take to the twisties last night in Rancho Santa Fe (for you San Diegans - you know these roads). Anyways, my buddy insisted I drive his car, a lowered e30 325e. Well to make a long story short I fucked up on a turn (poor driving on my part + bad tires). With some serious understeer I lost controll of the car - Did my best to get it back under control and ended up hitting the brakes and going up on a small dirt hill.

It happened in a flash and we were pretty shooken up. We tried to throw it in reverse to back out of the small ditch/hill we were on and had no luck. LUCKILY at the very second we found out we couldnt get out of there without a tow. A guy in a pickup drove by and stopped to help us. We ended up getting towed out by an all around good guy. The car had no signs of physical damage what-so-ever. We were very fortunate. I told my friend at this point - if there was any damage I take full responsibility and would do whatever I need to make sure his ride is the same as it was.

Anyways - my buddy obviously took to the wheel at this point. And sure enough we see some lights approching us from behind very quickly. Turns out we ended up toying around with an STI and my friend was definitely not babying the car at this point - despite all that had just happened. Good times with the STI - but Im still very worried about his car.

Hes assuring me the whole time that his car is fine and nothing happened and that I need to let it go. I still feel horrible and am quite skeptical.

Leaving rancho and getting back into town we stopped at a 7-11 to cool down at the crazy series of events we had just taken in. We go inside and come back out and are sitting down in front of his car having a drink. I notice a half-dollar size puddle of coolant sittin about 6 inches in front of his front bumper.

I asked him if that was from his car and he said no. There were no visible leaks at this point in time.

This morning he calls me and tells me that his car is overheating. DAMN! So I cruise over to his house ASAP and take a look at his car. Sure enough it was spewing coolant And my first thought was that it was doing to be a damaged radiator - but aha! It turns out to be the Fan belt is missing. Parts of the fan belt are found in side his engine and look BADLY frayed.

    The question:
We went today to buy a new belt and got it. However intallation doesnt look like its going to be too easy. What do you guys think else could be potentially wrong besides just the belt? I know the water pump, alternator and fan all share the same belt (to my knowledge). Do you think this will be as easy as slapping on a new belt? Do you think the belt breaking was caused by going up on that dirt hill (the belt sits higher up on the engine than other ones that remained in tact)? Was this belt breakage maybe aided by a past problem? Thoughts, opinions?

    But please no lectures :D

    Cliffs notes please?

Check all the pullies for any burrs or nics that would shred the belt up, as well as pully alignment since alternator mounting bushings can go bad and screw with that. If thats fine you may have just had an old belt that was past due.
