    flywheel (bolt) question

Hey I just got a lightweight flywheel for my m50 swap, (http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...ID=520-020-228)

My manual says that I need to use new flywheel bolts? Whats the deal with that? Also, I know to tourque the stock flywheel to 85-90 ft.lbs, but what about this one? I bought it used so I dont have anything from turner.

The stock ones will do fine as long as their in good shape

Get new ones, this is not something you want to do twice, call turner and ask the size in which you should use ( my findanza ltw fw came with shorter than stock ones because its singe mass instead of dual) New ones, loctite, proper torque!!

I concure I didn't use new ones but mine weren't bad, but next time I have to split my trans/engine I will pick up some new ones. For a few bucks it's alot of piece of mind

They're stretch bolts so they SHOULD be replaced, and considering you just spent $500 or whatever on a flywheel what's $20 for bolts? With that being said I have reused them on cars I didn't want to spend any money on, and at shop I worked at they reused them and never had a failure

The flywheel bolts are not torque to yield. If they were the the tightening procedure would be specified as an initial torque and angles to turn the bolt. While it is best to use new bolts, you can reuse the bolts. Just be sure to use thread sealant on them.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Who has re-used the harmonic balancer bolt? The e36 Bentley says it's one time use but it doesn't have an angle torque it's just 300'lbs. I already ordered one but when the dealership said that they had never ordered that part in before I started wondering... Maybe the shop techs don't even replace it and the Bentley is full of shit?

the nuts are oval, and stretch when they are tight.
but if you use blue locktite, youll be fine.

1st few times i bought new ones, but in the past 5 years, ive had em off 3 or 4 times, and just reused them.

btw, the harmonic balancer was removed asap.
easier to get those bolts now too.

                    and for reference,
i just did my clutch/ flywheel, and i also got new bolts for that.
they come with some yellow stuff on the threads, and that is locktite stuff, so if you do re-use them, always use locktite.

i now have 16 old flywheel bolts in a bag. (its like 40 bucks from the dealer)
12 old harmonic balancer nuts in a bag
lots of exhaust bolts in a bag...(lots of money if i were to buy em again,)

but fyi, shops re-use bolts all the time.
rarely would they replace them, unless they were damaged OR you brought them in.
                    and once
i bought new exhaust bolts, and brought them to the exhaust place who welded up some headers, and they totally forgot about them, and lost the bag...so i had old nuts (but thankfully new studs i inserted myself) and lost the money for the new ones...(jerks)....never went back to them either.

                    crap.
i should call myself the rambler
