Very Strange dash illumination... Aliens Perhaps?

This is very strange... the lights that illuminate the climate controls seem to have a mind of there own. They never flicker - the problem is that whenever I turn on my lights, anywhere between 0 and all (3?) of the bulbs will illuminate, in any particular order. Which ones turn on are often different every time.
What could be the problem?

This is getting annoying, and sometimes the lights are on and sometimes not. This morning it started with 0 lights and 2 were on when I got to school.

probably loose connections, or shitty bulbs.

It could be loose. I will check the bulbs when I have time to get the dash out (which is a real bitch). The bulbs could be on "the blink" but I thought they were incandescents, so this seems wierd.
