    e30 - outdoor therm still reads -22F

Just replaced the outdoor thermometer and the OBC still reads -22F. It is FIRMLY seated in the connector, but obviously not reading the beautiful outdoor SoCal temps.

What are the possible fixes? I have not done ANY trouble-shooting yet. That awaits this weekend.

What did you replace the sensor? Usually that is the only only problem, george graves sells them for around 10 bucks.

Yes, replaced the sensor....possibly got a bad one? Though this one is VERY clean and was stated to be working from the car it came from.

Do I need to disconnect the battery to re-set the OBC or anything like that? Or should a properly functioning one be a "plug-and-play" type of deal? If so, then it is likely a bad sensor. Any other trouble-shooting first?

It should work without having to "cycle" the battery. If you have a multimeter, hook it up to the sensor and try holding it with your hand (or maybe get a blow dryer) to heat up the sensor. See if the ohms change. If the resistance changes, you have a wiring problem. If not, get a new sensor.

You can't really wire it up wrong. I've blindly fixed mine twice after it fell out of its zip-tie mounting bracket and ripped off on the road, and have hooked it up both ways. Far as I can tell it's just a thermistor and only varies resistance between the two wires.

The wires that go to the sensor come off the OBC, run in their own harness and pop out near the fuse box. They run along the driver's side fender top, down toward the headlight, and drop below to the fog light area right around the ABS pump location.

It's inside it's own sheathing - so it's really not bad to repair if you have to - not like you have to dig into a big wiring harness or something. Just two wires in what amounts to a long black straw. When the wires make that sharp turn downward neat the ABS pump, you'll often get a break in the wires - it's inside the plastic - so you can't see it, but sometimes you can feel for it.

The best way to see if you have a break in the wires is to connect them together. When you do that your display should read very high - like 122 degrees. If you have a break - you need to find it and repair it.

Other wise you have a bad sensor. They aren't 100% sealed and over time they rot from the inside out. I sell an upgraded for $12.50 shipped. But they are on sale right now for $10 shipped.
