    Anyone ever replace the starter?

Any tips on replacing the starter?

Is it possible to replace it from the top side of the engine?

It might be possible to remove it from the top but I've never tried it. I removed mine from under the car with a long extension bar. You will also need a female TORX socket, size E14.

How long did it take you to replace the starter?

      Was it pretty tough?

It doesn't take too long, maybe an hour. It helps if someone is there with you so one person can loosen the bolts from under the car while someone else is keeping the bolts still in the engine bay. Also, remove the intake box, it will make it a lot easier to get to the wires and bolts.

What model do you have? I have a 318is so I was able to squeeze my arm in and get to part of it from the top. It is very difficult to remove IMO, you can do it though, its just a pain. There is a nob that it slides onto after you get the bolts off that makes it a little bit difficult to slide on and off as well.

            I have a '90 325iS model.

Is there any other special tools? I looked around the starter motor and it definitely looked pretty tight in there. A friend recommended a stubby wrench and/or a universal joint?

you can get it from the top with no problems. You shoudnt need anything other than regular 3/8 socket set, with a 8 inch extension. and a flat tip screwdriver to hould the backside of the bolt head on the bellhousing side
