quick question, should there be a gasket that sits in between the oil pump and block on the 85 318i m10b18.?

I don't believe so, my 325e didnt have one.
There is some kind of spacer, or shim that's used. Just looked it up to see if there is a gasket listing. none

It's a shim. You put thicker ones in to take slack out of the chain.
