    Oil Pan gasket

How long does it take you guys to change an oil pan gasket? I believe mine is leaking. At least thats what it looks like to me. I dont have a lift, just jack and jackstands. I looked through the Bentley and it doesnt look like its too hard of a job. Just unbolting the steering rack and front subframe. You dont have to lift up the motor or anything do you? Does anybody have any tips for getting it done quicker/easier?

    Will

My write-up on changing the M20 oil pan. Disregard posts following the intial write-up, mentioning steps that were not needed. The write-up was edited and re-written.

This write-up was intended for chaning the oil pan, but it's the same procedure to change the gasket.

If you dont hoist the engine up, can you get the oil pan out without removing the pump? Did you unbolt the steering rack? Or did you leave it attached? I know in the writeup it doesnt say you did but I wanna double check. The Bentley says to unbolt the steering rack, and the bellhousing, and thats pretty much it. It doesnt mention hoisting the engine or anything. I would rather unbolt the steering rack compared to hoisting the engine up. What do ya think?

The way the Bentley tells to do it, you have to remove the oil pump.

So the easiest way to do it is hoist up the engine?

yes, you must hoist it up. Start by putting the brace on the fenders/engine, then undo the control arms on the back side (2 bolts each arm) then take the motor mount nuts off, now disconnect all 4 nuts for the front swaybar, then the 4 subframe bolts. Then lift the engine as much as possible. After that, its just a struggle on your back. If you can somehow use a lift, DO NOT PASS IT UP.

I just finished doing an E36 oil pain this morning, it was not fun on the ground.

You don't need to unbolt the subframe or the swaybar, just the control arms from the frame.

And what are you talking about when you say "the brace on the fenders/engine" ? All you have to do is jack the car up, and put it on jackstands.

so... control arms from the frame come off, motor mounts come off, bellhousing comes off,m otor is hoisted up, oil pan comes off. Dont need to loosen the tranny mounts? Dont need to unbolt the steering rack or the subframe?

I did 2 different oil pans. One for a gasket and one for a busted pan. I just unbolted the engine mounts and jacked up the engine as far as it would go and put blockes under the engine mounts. This gave me the clearance I needed but I still had to remove the Oil pump but I neve touched the steering rack or cross member. I took about 2 1/2 hrs with out an overhead rack and no air tools.

Doing an oil pan on an E30 with an M20 is different than an E36 with an M50/S50.

I didn't hoist the engine, I didn't see the need to spend the extra money to rent one when it wouldn't be worth it.

I didn't everything this guy did

He's got an auto, but i'm sure you can figure it out...

It seems there is no consensus on the best way to do this. I think I'll rent a hoist - seems like the safest bet.

I'm not clear on why you have to unbolt the Control Arms. Or am I an idiot? Wow I just realised how old this thread is.
