    Convertible Weight Ballast

If I replaced this literally 50lb lead weight in the trunk with the battery bolted in, would I have the same supposed counterbalance the weight supposedly provides?

    To answer your question: No

To answer the question you should have asked "is it noticeable": No

    Do it

i have put my battery there, and now it wouldnt off set cause you remove 50lbs and then you move 50 lbs back, so basically you removed 50lbs from the front instead

i recently moved this chunk of dark matter from my parts storage area.

Seriously, why is it so heavy and what kind of engineering is that?

PS, i removed it when i moved my battery to the back.

its for when the convertible top is down.
helps keep the car 48/52 weight ratio/ balance

you could also add a big 15"dvc subwoofer (like me).
and some pro3 or track e30s like those weights, b/c they have bmw printed on them, and they already have bolt holes, a perfect 50lb balast .

so bring em to the track and give em away

it's not a vibration dampener like in the e36 'verts, is it? In my vert, I'm required to use a vibration proof battery because of this.

This sounds like the best explaination so far. Maybe thats why the battery is in the front where it should be...to counteract the ballast when the top is down.

its p/n says its a vibration damper.

most people agree with the ballast thing too though.

I'm not clear on what you're saying when you say uncut line, you mean to relocate the battery?
