Do you know what ZDDP is and what it does. It will not have an immediate effect on your engine. M20 loves 20W-50, won't give it any extra HP but will make it a bit quieter. I use castrol because it was the only brand in 20W-50 at the store. Also non-synthetic oil is highly refiened and if you know your engineering chemistry you will know that oil that comes out of a refienery is pretty pure and I would consider it very close to synthetic. Even synthetic you cannot control everything, there will be isomers. You are correct though, its all about the surfactant and additive packages.
Other then the specs, weight/temp oil is oil, it doesn't matter too much as long as you change it regularly. I wouldn't pay extra for synthetic unless you engine costs >20 grand and you race it.
