Any way to loosed up the shifter?

I just pulled the whole shfit consule out of my 85 318i And now know why the shifter was so hard to shift into gear. The conection betweent he lower rod and the Shifter arm is extremly tight and I can barley rotate the rod. The rod itself is rusty and the conection looks rusty. I'd like to free this up some before I reinstall it. Do you think just Oiling it would work? or should I Wd-40 it then pack grease all around it?

My linkage was like that too, when I did my clutch job.
I just pulled it all apart, cleaned off the rust, greased all moving parts including the pivot ball. still shifts pretty smooth, but the bushing is shot.

The clip that held it on was rusted to hell, so I had to drill a small hole and use a cotter pin instead.
Damn, I wish I would have ordered a shortshift kit, it sucks when you have to put old parts back in because you didn't anticipate their need of replacement.

All the bushings are pefect as there is no slop at all. this rusty joint is the only problem.
