I cracked the cluster open and checked solder points and everything looked to be ok there. I saw nothing that i'd consider out of the ordinary. SI lights seem to work which leads me to believe everything is ok there... so...trying to find all options

Check the solder points visually or with a meter???
Ma che cazzo state dicendo? :|

visually, but there were absolutely no signs of any failure, burn out, cracks or anything.

But its a printed circuit. Until you check point to point you'll never know for sure if its in the circuit board.

I dont disagree...and it could be a small break in the circuit, but usually you see darkened or burnt silicone around it when it happens...

True I forgot these boards are pretty crusty technology and you can see the burnt parts. I think you should at least ring out where the pin 7 to the end of the board just to make sure it makes it all the way through

If you seen anything burnt - it's not going to be silicone - circuit boards are made from fiberglass and copper.

ok...well an update. I put a meter to the connector, (very nice of bmw to make a 2 piece connector so as to not have to remove wires!). They checked out just fine. I got signal and rising voltage as I revved the motor. Seems it IS in fact the cluster, which means figuring out whats wrong there.

                      1. SI board is working, at least to light up the lights
                      2. No solder points LOOKed damaged, but now will have to go back and check continuity
                      3. Possibly just a bad tach outright...need a new one. BOOO
                      4. Screw it all wait and get a STACK digital dash. (haha i wish)

ok well, not that anyone really cares, but this weekend I'll be borrowing a fluke signal generator and putting it to the tach and seeing what I can work out. I really dont want to have to buy a new cluster seeing as I plan to ditch it all in the future...
