engine block coolant drain plug broken

Pulled the drain plug on my m42 to flush the shitty coolant and replace with new stuff frombmw. The plug came out fine, but half the threads were gone,I used a magnet to get some other fragments of the plug out,but I'm not sure how much more is in there. How worried should I be? Also, what is the seal made of? I have a good plug from a spare block, but need a new seal.

There's only 4 rings of threads on that bolt. VERY short.

Comparing the good and bad plugs along with most of what was on the magnet, it looks like I got most of it. Just means I have to rebuild that spare motor sooner than I thought to feel truly confident in this car again. Since we're on the topic of coolant, it's fine to bypass the heater core, right? That is leaking onto the carpet, and I don't have the time or money to fix it til summer.

Bypass away. If you don't need heat, then no need for a core!
The difference between porcupines and BMWs is that porcupines have the pricks on the outside!

Don't eliminate the heater core by looping the hoses. That will result in part of the coolant flow through the engine bypassing the radiator. Instead, plug the hoses.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
